Brattle Principals to Speak at NARUC Summer Policy Summit
Brattle Principals Judy Chang and Jurgen Weiss will speak at the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) Summer Policy Summit to be held July 15-18, 2018 in Scottsdale, AZ.
National experts and policymakers will attend the Summit to discuss and analyze best practices and learn about new policy issues that are important to both state and federal utility regulators.
Ms. Chang will serve as a panelist on, “The Promise and Challenges of Energy Storage: Order 841 and the States’ Role,” on Monday, July 16. The panel will discuss Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Order 841which aims to remove barriers in electric energy storage. A Brattle study found that storage markets have the potential to grow to 50,000 MW if state policies can further aid Order 841.
On Tuesday, July 17, Dr. Weiss will be a panelist on, “Strange Bedfellows: Energy Efficiency and Electrification.” For decades, energy efficiency programs have been saving customers money while lowering utility system costs, reducing emissions, and doing so cost effectively. Driven by these steady efficiency gains, electric and natural gas loads across the country have declined, but transformative shifts are on the horizon. Generation portfolios are becoming less carbon intensive and economy-wide electrification could lead to steady electric load growth, increased grid efficiency and flexibility, and further reductions in emissions. This panel will explore the intersection of efficiency and electrification and how regulatory policies could adjust in light of these trends.
