Dr. Roper is a financial economist specializing in securities litigation, class certification, internal or regulatory investigations, and matters requiring valuation or damage estimates.

For more than 15 years, Dr. Roper has consulted and testified in securities litigation matters, with much of his experience involving bet-the-firm litigation. His work includes Rule 10b-5 and Section 11/12 class actions and spans a variety of securities, including debt, options, and various fixed-income products. Dr. Roper is recognized by courts as an expert in market efficiency, event studies, damages, and causation, and his published research relating to price impact and materiality following Halliburton II has been cited in court proceedings.

Dr. Roper also serves as a class certification expert, providing economic analysis and testimony related to Rule 23(b). He has analyzed putative classes comprising various types of financial and non-financial products, including common stock, private and publicly traded corporate debt, foreign exchange trading, checking accounts, imported beer advertising, multivitamins, and annuities. At Stanford School of Law, Dr. Roper taught students how to conduct economic analysis responsive to Rule 23(b) inquiries.

Drawing on his 20 years of experience teaching, researching, and conducting valuations, Dr. Roper consults and testifies on matters involving complex valuations. This includes valuing start-ups and venture capital funded private companies. He has conducted and reviewed business valuations in fair market value appraisal matters involving the Delaware Court of Chancery, assisted in international arbitration, and performed valuations under Reg 482 for transfer pricing. His valuation work spans a variety of financial instruments, including privately placed 144a straight and convertible debt, equity securities, OTC traded equity and debt securities, and preferred equity typically encountered in venture-backed businesses.

Additionally, Dr. Roper serves as a consulting expert in internal and regulatory investigations,  evaluating related matters with the SEC, the Department of Labor, the CFTC, the IRS, and foreign regulatory bodies. Dr. Roper has experience with topics including insider trading, market manipulation, risk management, and valuation. He has worked on matters involving proprietary trading algorithms, LIBOR, swaps, distressed debt, unicorn start-ups, and hedge funds.

Dr. Roper’s expertise has deep roots in academia. He has taught at Stanford School of Law, the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Business, and Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy. His academic research – which has been published in the Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, and Washington University Law Review – focuses on asset pricing and valuation questions resulting from different corporate activities. Dr. Roper ranks in the top 10% of downloaded finance authors on SSRN.

Before joining Brattle, Dr. Roper founded his own litigation consulting firm, Catalyst Economic Consulting. He gained prior experience as an Executive Vice President and a Vice President, respectively, at two global economics consultancies.
