Brattle Principal Sam Newell Authors Op-Ed in The Boston Globe Suggesting Required Fuel Economy Rating Labels for New Automobiles
In an op-ed published in the August 12, 2010 issue of The Boston Globe, Dr. Sam Newell, a principal in Brattle’s Cambridge office, proposes that auto manufacturers be required to emblazon the EPA fuel economy rating prominently and permanently next to the license plate on every new car.
In the op-ed, “Look at that car’s MPG!” Dr. Newell suggests that such a labeling policy would create a greater sense of awareness and responsibility when it comes to customers’ vehicle purchases. This could result in a reduction in the total gasoline consumption for passenger vehicles, decreased dependence on foreign oil, and smaller risk of catastrophic climate change.
