Senior Consultant and Co-Leader of Brattle’s Telecommunications, Internet, Media & Entertainment practice Dr. Paroma Sanyal recently discussed the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s (NTIA’s) Notice of Funding Opportunities – and what it means for Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program funding applications – at a Technology Policy Institute (TPI) webinar. She was quoted in a recent Communications Daily article about the TPI webinar, discussing a potential third-party mechanism for program evaluation and also noting that there will be implementation concerns for smaller operators that aren’t used to the more “time-consuming” requirements of the BEAD program.

Senior Associate Dr. Haris Tabakovic Coauthors Article on Machine Learning in the Strategic Management Journal

Brattle Senior Associate Dr. Haris Tabakovic has coauthored an article on machine learning for the Strategic Management Journal with Jaeho Choi and Dr. Anoop Menon.

The article, “Using Machine Learning to Revisit the Diversification-Performance Relationship,” examines the relationship between corporate diversification and firm performance using natural language processing (NLP), a machine learning technique. Along with discussing the application of topic modeling, a widely used NLP technique, the article also introduces a novel methodology to quantify and measure diversification across multiple dimensions by incorporating human judgement into the interpretation of machine-learned patterns. The authors explore how this methodology can inform important strategic decisions related to firms diversifying their business activities across products, industries, or geographic markets.

Dr. Minjae Song Examines Platform Market Power in Two-Sided Markets in AEJ Article

In two-sided markets, a shared platform or intermediary brings together two different groups of stakeholders, such as how magazines connect advertisers with readers.

In an article appearing in the May 2021 issue of the American Economic Journal: Microeconomics, Brattle Principal Dr. Minjae Song examines platform market power in two-sided markets, using a structural model to estimate markup on both sides of a platform as well as predict price and welfare changes resulting from platform mergers.

In the article, “Estimating Platform Market Power in Two-Sided Markets with an Application to Magazine Advertising,” Dr. Song applies data on TV magazines in Germany to demonstrate his two-sided market structural model, with magazines serving as the platform that charges the readers for buying the magazine (on one side) and the advertisers for placing ads (on the other side). The article shows that platforms may choose to take a loss on one side of the market in order to take a profit on the other side, and that platform mergers can benefit some agents by either lowering prices or by attracting more agents on the other side of the market.
